Music in the Time of Corona
We went to our last live concert on Monday March 9 – a blues show at the Logan Center at the University if Chicago. There was already talk of not going to events but it still seemed like people were overreacting. I continued to live life as normal that week going to the gym and volunteering at the children’s museum on Thursday but by Friday it was clear that we needed to take precautions. We had tickets to see one of my favorite singers Liz Mandeville on Sunday the 15th at Buddy Guy’s Legends which we were excited about as we haven’t gone there since we moved to Chicago. Even though the show did go on we reluctantly decided to not to go.
The next day I came home from a social distancing walk in the park to the sound of a cd I didn’t immediately recognize. It turned out it was the Alabama Shakes and my husband had decided to begin playing all our cd’s in alphabetical order.

While that should probably keep our ears full if the stay at home order extends for years, we would really miss live music so I was glad when Paul from Watermelon Wednesdays sent a page of links to old concerts. I immediately watched the Hot Club of Cowtown one followed by The Sweetback Sisters and sent a donation as requested each time.
There is something about coming together in difficult times though so we were glad when we got a link to the new Signature Sound’s Parlor Room Home Sessions. So far we’ve seen Taylor Ashton and Rachael Price (apparently they’re married!), Dirk Powell and his daughter Amelia, and the Birds of Chicago live from their homes. It’s great to be able to support them through the tip jar and the concerts have all been entertaining. It was really fun to watch JT of Birds of Chicago watch himself making faces.

There are other platforms for live concerts so I think we’ll be checking some of them out too.
While I have listened to Pandora in the car I haven’t really gotten into streaming. With so many cd’s and a good stereo system, I just haven’t seen the point. But with so many people working from home we’ve been asked to keep the sound down so I’ve been using my earphones and listening to Pandora during the day. “Ob la di, ob-la-da, life goes on”!
